Your Language is Your Legacy
Every day, more Dagbanli children grow up unable to speak to their grandparents. Diasporans feel disconnected. Spouses struggle to blend into the culture. Workers moving to the Northern Region want to connect meaningfully with the people.
Language is the bridge. Culture is the root. Identity is the foundation.
If we don’t pass this down now… the next generation will lose what our ancestors protected for centuries.
This course exists to stop that loss — and rebuild the connection.

The Heart Behind the Mission
Kumtili Dikpong (Abdul-Latif Umar)
“I built this program because I lived the struggle.”
I left Yendi at age seven and grew up in Accra. Over time, I watched my language, culture, and identity slowly fade.
Years later, returning to the North for senior high school reconnected me to my roots. I listened to elders, explored forgotten historical sites, and realized how much of Dagbon’s knowledge was disappearing.
That realization led me to a single question:
If we don’t preserve our heritage, who will?
In 2012, I launched my first Dagbon history website. That effort grew into Dagbonkingdom.com and the Dagbon Media Foundation, which for over a decade has documented and shared Dagbon’s history, culture, and stories with the world.
This Dagbani language program exists because:
- our children are losing the language
- diasporans are disconnected
- spouses want to belong
- newcomers need cultural understanding
This is more than a course. It is my mission, my service, and my legacy to Dagbon.
And now, I invite you to pass that legacy on.

Why We Created This Course
For over 12 years, Dagbon Media Foundation has shared Dagbon history, culture, language, news, and tourism with the world. Throughout this journey, we’ve received countless messages from people—at home and abroad—who want to learn Dagbanli but have no structured way to do so.
Parents in Accra, London, and New York tell us their children are losing the ability to speak Dagbanli, adopting English and other languages instead. Even those who can speak the language often don’t know the history, identity, and cultural values that make them Dagbamba.
We believe identity builds confidence. When children understand who they are and where they come from, they stand taller, feel proud, and develop a deep sense of belonging.
This course exists to change that—to help the next generation speak the language of their ancestors, stay connected to their roots, and carry the heritage of Dagbon into the future.
